Gambar
(CNN, 2023) ( October 2, 2023) The French government has vowed action to “reassure and protect” the public as its capital Paris reports a “widespread” rise in bedbugs. French Transport Minister Clement Beaune has said he would convene a meeting this week to “undertake further action” to “reassure and protect” the public from the reported surge in the numbers of the blood-sucking insect. French transport operators remain “vigilant” about bedbugs following reports of what was said to be sightings in public transport but say there have been no sightings in recent days.  RATP, the operator behind the Parisian metro, said it is “extremely vigilant on the matter” but there had been no recent sightings. The company told CNN on Monday that “each sighting is taken into account and is subject to a treatment,” adding that “these last few days, there have been no proven cases of bedbugs recorded in our equipment.” RATP said a report was made on Wednesday last week but after an assessment “no p...

2023 World Rabies Day Joint Statement: Unite under One Health to fast-track the elimination of rabies in Africa

Gambar
(APO Group, 2023) (September 28, 2023) World Rabies Day is dedicated to raising global awareness about rabies, with a primary focus on its prevention and control. Rabies is a zoonotic disease, typically transmitted to humans through infected dog bites. While rabies has a mortality rate of nearly 100 percent, it is preventable by vaccinating dogs, providing post-exposure prophylactic treatment for dog bite victims, and raising awareness about the disease . Today, on the occasion of the 17th World Rabies Day, the Quadripartite Regional Coordination Group composed of Regional Representatives/Directors of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH-founded as OIE), together with the Pan-African Rabies Control Network (PARACON) of the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), are collectively making a joint appeal to the regi...

Tuberculosis Numbers Increasing in Nunavik Communities

Gambar
(Jo-Ann Demers, 2023) (July 6, 2023) An annual music festival has been postponed due to a tuberculosis outbreak in northern Quebec, while the Nunavik region grapples with a series of outbreaks in several communities. Five communities in Nunavik are currently experiencing tuberculosis outbreaks. These latest outbreaks are part of a problem that continues to plague many remote northern communities, due to overcrowded housing and poverty. Although the Nunavik Regional Health and Social Services Committee did not specify which Nunavik communities were affected, Yassen Tcholakov, head of the infectious diseases unit, confirmed the number of outbreaks and said they has recorded 58 active cases in Nunavik since its inception.  In affected communities in Nunavik, health workers are now screening individuals and in some cases entire communities. Tcholakov said they are also trying to get the message out to these communities to make people aware of the disease. “It`s something we're a...

Peru is Reeling from Record Case Counts of Dengue Fever. What's Driving the Outbreak?

Gambar
(Ernesto Benavides, 2023) (June 21, 2023) Lima, Peru – For Lorena Vigo, getting dengue, the virus once known as "breakbone fever," was like no illness she had previously experienced. On top of the headache, upset stomach and aching joints, she bled from her gums after coming down last month with the mosquito-borne virus in Piura. That's the city of 600,000 residents in northern Peru that is the epicenter of the Andean nation's record-breaking dengue outbreak. Peru's unprecedented outbreak has been driven by unusually warm and rainy conditions on Peru's desert coast, first triggered by Yaku, a tropical cyclone not normally seen in this part of the Pacific, and then a localized "coastal" El Niño effect of warmer ocean waters. Both hit in April and May. Scientists are reluctant to finger climate change as the culprit for this outbreak. But the combination of this year's Yaku, the coastal El Niño and Peru's unusual weather have created conditi...

WHO Certifies Azerbaijan and Tajikistan as Malaria-Free

Gambar
(WHO, 2023) (March 29, 2023) The World Health Organization (WHO) has certified Azerbaijan and Tajikistan for achieving elimination of malaria in their territories. Azerbaijan`s and Tajikistan`s achievement was possible thanks to sustained investment and the dedication of the health workforce, together with targeted prevention, early detection and treatment of all malaria cases. They have vigorously supported targeted malaria interventions – including, for example, prevention measures such as spraying the inside walls of homes with insecticides, promoting early detection and treatment of all cases, and maintaining the skills and capacities of all health workers engaged in malaria elimination.  Both Azerbaijan and Tajikistan utilize national electronic malaria surveillance systems that provide nearly real-time detection of cases and allow for rapid investigations to determine if an infection is local or imported. Additional interventions include biological methods of larvae control, ...
